Skunk Facts & Identification
The striped skunk is the native skunk found throughout the United States including areas of Pennsylvania, Ohio. These animals have black to brown fur with a white to cream stripe extending from the head to the tail. They weigh between 4 and 10 pounds, with a length of 20-30 inches. Their forefeet have long, curved claws adapted for digging, and their hind feet are shorter and straighter. The most distinctive characteristic of a skunk is the pungent odor they are able to excrete from their anal glands. Skunks have the abilty to spray this oily musk up to 10 feet. They are able to use this as their defense mechanism against prey.
Striped Skunk Diet
Striped Skunks are primarily insectivorous, consuming grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, and caterpillars. Although the striped skunk are primarily insectivorours but will consume vegtables and other mammal such as mice, voles, eggs and the chicks of ground nesting birds. They will also consume vegtables,apples, blackberries, and cherries.

Striped skunk are known to inhabit a wide variety of habitats, particularly mixed woodlands. In highly populated areas skunks commonly will bed under porches and steps, outbuildings and in homes crawlspaces.
